For a modern workflow, start with one high-resolution texture, choose a blend mode that fits the source image, then lower opacity until the detail supports the composition. The strongest results usually preserve clean faces, small type and logos while letting texture live in backgrounds, shadows and larger display lettering.
Practical workflow
A useful texture overlay should solve a specific visual problem. Paper grain can soften a perfectly clean digital poster, dust and scratches can create an analogue film feeling, torn paper can support collage work, and smoke or fog can add separation behind a title. Search terms such as paper texture overlay, grunge texture, film dust overlay, concrete texture, plastic wrap overlay and torn paper texture describe very different jobs, so choose the surface first instead of downloading a large pack and hoping one file fits.
Resolution matters as much as style. A small texture can work for a social post but become visibly soft on a poster or packaging mockup. Check the pixel dimensions of JPG and PNG overlays, then preview the texture at the final output size. For print, avoid enlarging a detailed paper or concrete texture so far that pores and fibres become blurred. For screen work, a lighter file can be preferable when the texture is only a subtle background layer.
Photoshop texture workflows usually work best when the overlay stays on its own layer. The strongest treatment still protects hierarchy. If the title already uses a detailed display font or text effect, keep the surrounding texture quieter. If the typography is very clean, the background can carry more surface variation. Judge the final design at thumbnail size as well as full resolution, because aggressive grain that looks interesting while zoomed in may merge into visual noise when the artwork is seen in a feed.
Keep the original texture file separate from project-specific edits. A practical folder can contain the untouched source, a working PSD with masks and adjustments, and exported JPG or PNG deliverables. If you recolour or crop a texture for a campaign, save that version with the project instead of overwriting the original. This makes it easier to reuse the source correctly and compare the final treatment later.
